An open-source desktop chat app that runs models offline, keeps conversations as local files and can expose a local API.
- Open source
- Works offline after setup
- Local API server
A self-hosted web chat interface for local model runners such as Ollama, with users, document upload and model switching.
Open WebUI is a chat interface you host yourself, usually on the same machine as a local model runner such as Ollama. You open it in a browser and get a familiar chat layout, with a list of installed models, saved conversations and settings per model.
It supports several user accounts, which makes it a common choice for a household or small team sharing one capable computer. You can upload documents to a chat, keep prompt templates and connect it to other model servers that use a compatible API.
Setup usually means running it in a container or with a Python package, so it suits people comfortable with a little server work. Read its license terms before you rebrand or redistribute it, and keep the host updated like any web app on your network.
Not enough info yet on open source, local API server. Check the tool's own site.
