Why this directory exists
Running AI on your own computer has gone from a research hobby to something many people do every day, but the tools are scattered across app stores, code repositories and forum threads. Names change, projects fork, and it is hard to tell a maintained app from an abandoned one. We built LaptopMind to give a plain first view: what each tool does, which job it is mainly for, and what to check before you install it.
The site is for people who want their data to stay on their own machine, such as a consultant with client files, a journalist with interview recordings or a developer working under strict code rules, and for tinkerers who enjoy seeing how far a laptop can go. We keep descriptions short and factual, mark what we couldn't confirm, and leave out speed scores that would only hold on our hardware. Tool makers can submit or claim a listing for free, and paid placements are always labeled.
How tools are chosen and described
A tool is listed once we have confirmed that its official site or repository is live and that it does what our description says. Each tool sits in the one category that fits its main job, even when it covers several. We don't publish speed scores, rankings or prices, because results depend on your hardware and a score would be our opinion presented as a fact.
Running a model locally keeps your prompts on your machine, but the model itself still comes with a license. We link to official sources, and we ask you to read each model's terms before you use it for work.
Right now that is 66 local AI tools in 10 categories, last checked 2026-11-04.
Makers can submit or claim a listing for free. A person checks every request before anything changes. Paid placements are marked Sponsored wherever they appear, and they never change what we write about a tool.
Corrections and removals
If a listing is wrong, or a tool has shut down, tell us. We answer within a week and rebuild the directory with the change.
